Boating Safety Course Information
After September 15, 2009 all boat operators will be required to have a
boating safety certificate.
Non residents operating their own boats do not require proof of
competency (ie. boating safety card). Non residents renting a boat in
Canada either have to have a boating safety card or complete a Rental
Boat Safety Checklist. Anyone under the age of 16 must have a boating
safety certificate.

There are online courses available in Canada and the US for the boating
safety certificate. If you have certification from your own home state that
is all you will need. The courses are usually free online and you pay
once you pass the exam. The exams are not really difficult, most are
geared for ages 8 and up. I will put some links here for some of the
online courses and exams.
Rental Boat Safety Checklists may be available at camp next year. We
will keep you posted and give you more information in the newsletter.
NEW NEW NEW We can now offer the boaterexam.com test at camp.
We have high speed internet and you can take the exam here and we will
supervise it. We have $10 off coupons so the net price is $41.95 CAD. It
is more expensive than some of the alternatives, but it is only 36
questions in 45 minutes and is not that difficult. You will need a credit
card to pay for it online.
www.boatus.com - this is a free online course and exam good for
some states
www.boat-ed.com/ - this is a free online course and $15 exam that is
good for 41 states. You pay when you pass the exam.
www.boatingbasicsonline.com/course/boating/index - this is another
online course good for most states
www.boaterexam.com - this is a Canadian course with a US site that
has courses for some states. It is more expensive than the two above
alternatives ($49.95 for online exam)
There are many other alternatives out there for online or classroom
courses. If these do not meet your needs, check with your local
Department of Natural Resources office.

On June 1, 2009, a new American law known as the Western
Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require U.S. citizens 16 years of
age or over who re-enter the United States by land and sea to have a
